Northern Territory

For the gay and lesbian traveller, the Northern Territory offers a variety of adventure experiences. Paradoxically, far from the legendary 'red-neck' attitudes of the past century, you'll experience a plethora of gay and lesbian owned businesses ready to help your dreams come true. From gay fishing trips in the Gulf Country, cosmopolitan Darwin, to Central Australia, you will find a series of adventures to suit all tastes.

There's something mystical about the Northern Territory - from the ancient cave paintings in Kakadu to the sacred Aboriginal monolith called Uluru/Ayers Rock and the mysterious beauty of Kata Tjuta/The Olgas. These skyscrapers are made out of rock, not steel, and one of the best shows in town is the star display at night. The Aboriginal presence here is strong, his or her 60,000-year-old cultural and spiritual connection to this region echoes in every rock and landmark. Each year, Alice Springs also hosts a gay and lesbian dance party and cultural festival, Alice Is Wonderland, providing visitors with a queer take on the great Australian outback.

And throughout the year, many of the locals meet over drinks at The Alice Springs Resort. The 'dry' season in the Top End (March thru October) is probably the best time of year to visit the capital Darwin and its environs including Litchfield and Kakadu National Parks. The Top End is lush and fragrant, dense and enigmatic, with a tremendous array of gay and lesbian experiences, including excellent restaurants, gay beaches and popular gay nightspots. Gay NT has something for everyone!
