Tasmania

Tasmania is a dream come true for gay and lesbian travellers who enjoy bushwalking and nature as well as food and wine. You will need a car here – but they are plentiful and inexpensive, and the driving is easy and safe.

The architectural remains of Australia’s Colonial past are evident throughout the island: don't miss a visit to penitentiaries like Port Arthur and Richmond, which stand as brutal reminders of the convict era.

Two of the most accessible wilderness areas in Tasmania are the Freycinet Peninsula and Cradle Mountain. The Freycinet National Park is on the East Coast. Give yourself time to drive to Coles Bay, and then walk into the magnificent Wineglass Bay. The alpine environment around Cradle Mountain couldn't be more different. But a one-day trek from the Lake Lilla to the top of Cradle Mountain comes as close to sublime as you're likely to get (weather permitting of course).

If it's food and wine you're interested in, the vineyards of the Tamar Valley are producing some very tasty Pinot Noirs and Rieslings, and the cellar doors are well worth the trip. The seafood, cheeses and other organic foods produced on this island state are amazingly tasty.

There's a network of gay-owned or gay-friendly guesthouses, hotels, and bed and breakfast places throughout Tasmania, and small but friendly gay and lesbian communities in Hobart and Launceston. Hobart has some great cafes and restaurants – but make sure your visit coincides with the Saturday markets at Salamanca - a feast for all senses.

There are air links from most cities, and a regular ferry service from Melbourne to the island.
